Research and Planning

We have started our A2 Media Coursework which is to produce a music video. To be able to produce and complete all this work we are going to have to work in groups, as there is a lot of work. If we want we can write our own music for the music video or use a song which is not recent. If we use a song it is vital that we ask for permission to use that song by writing to the music industry that owns the song. We also have to make sure we don't advertise their song in any way, for example, posting it on any social networking sites; Youtube, Facebook and MySpace. As well as, making a music video we are going to be making a magazine cover and a CD, to promote and advertise our music video. To be able to make a music video a lot of research and planning is involved. We are going to have to research a lot of music, music genres, videos, music tribes and camera angles, mise-en-scene and different type of editing that are used in the process of a music video. We are going to have to decide the type of music video we want, for example, there are performance based music videos which are mostly based on the stage with the artist or artists singing. In addition, there are also narrative based music videos, which have story to tell. These are some of the things we are going to have to consider while making our music video.

Our teacher has asked us to research a specific music video, analyse it and present to the class in groups. We are going to analyse Lady GaGa’s video ‘Bad Romance’, we are going to research on the camera and angles, lighting, mise-en-scene, editing and sound. This means a lot of work, as these headings have a lot of little sub headings within them. For example, mise-en-scene includes costume, props, colours, and facial expressions. We also have to individually research the codes and conventions of music videos to help us with our own music video. We don’t have to present this to the class however, we will have to post the presentation onto our Blogs.

I have started researching the codes and conventions of music videos and making a PowerPoint on it. As we are going to be researching Lady GaGa’s music video in groups, we thought it would be easier to break things down and put them together at the end. Therefore, I am going to research the camera and editing, while the others in my group are going to research the other conventions. At the end we will put all our research together and create a PowerPoint which we will present to the class. When presenting to the class we are not allowed to read off the board, instead we are going to use note cards, again we are not allowed to read of the note cards we are going to use them to guide us. Also, during the presentation we need to include at least two activities, which involve the whole class. This will hopefully help the class remember the codes and conventions of music videos, which they can add to their own music videos.

We presented our Lady GaGa ‘Bad Romance’ presentation today, firstly we introduced ourselves and explained what we were going to be doing. We then showed the class the video ‘Bad Romance’ so they would understand the codes and conventions better when we explained them. Also, we needed the class to watch the music video to be able to complete the activity we planned. The activity was to arrange the images from the music video in the order they were shown on in the music video. After the activity, we got into the presentation and started off by talking through the different camera angles that were used, why they were used, what they could mean and how they affect the audience. Then the rest of the group went through their own conventions and explained them to the rest of the class. At the end of the presentation we went had another activity. In this activity we divided the class into girls and boys, which we called the ladies and guy guys, as it fits in with the Lady GaGa theme. To make the game more exciting we asked the ladies to buzz by saying ‘GaGa Ohh La La’ and the guy guys to buzz by saying ‘Roma Roma MaMahh’. By doing this we were hoping to get the whole class involved into the activity and we were also relating to the video ‘Bad Romance’. We had 10 questions about the video ‘Bad Romance’ and most of the thing that we explained and went through. This way the class would hopefully be able to remember the conventions of a music video and add them in their own music video.
All of our presentations were recorded for evidence, and as soon as we get them we can upload them onto our blogs.

Like everyone else we wanted our music video to be different and unique in it's own way. We wanted the genre of the video to be Japop but, as it’s not a real genre it was hard finding any songs that fit into this type of music. A member of our group is going to be singing the song for the music video so we had to consider this when choosing a song for the music video. We discussed some songs we wouldn’t mind using for the music video and ended up with nine songs. Most of the songs were old, as they fit into the jazz theme that we wanted. We wanted to achieve the pop theme through the actual video, making the genre Japop. We then went through each of the nine songs and considered the narrative that would go with the song. We wanted our music video to be narrative based, as it would make the music video much more interesting if there was a story to go with the song. We wanted the narrative to be about Love because the music video is aimed at teenagers and we want the music video to be able to relate to them. Therefore, we had to think about all this when picking a song to use. After a very long discussion we finally ended up with two songs which were ‘L.O.V.E’ by Nat King Cole and ‘Love Fool’ by The Cardigans. Again we had to discuss the lyrics of the song, the narrative, setting, targeted audience, and characters and how it would all work out. In the end we chose L.O.V.E by Nat King Cole, it is an old song and we are thinking off editing it so it becomes a modern song to be able to target our audience. By editing the song and making it modern, we will be able to target our specific audience, as they would most unlikely listen to songs that are from the 60’s. We want to try and make this old song new by adding modern elements to the lyrics and video. To make the song modern we have a few ideas that involve changing parts of the lyrics and including social networking sites, which are used by many young teenagers. Or even a new touch screen phone, these are just little changes that wouldn’t have been present in the 60’s.

We are going to change the lyrics off the song, we’ve decided to keep the L-O-V-E part and change the ending of the sentences. So it’s not totally different than the original but not exactly the same as well. We might also add a new verse to the song. To make the song modern we are going to make the guitar in the background faster and also add drums. This way the song will have a faster beat, which will attract our target audience and we will be changing the song to make it our own. In our group we discussed what narrative would fit with the lyrics of the song and we came up with lots of different ideas, which were all good in their own way. When thinking of the narrative we had to consider many things for example, the characters, setting, costume, timing, song, theme, and much more.

We finally came up with a narrative for the music video we wanted it to be based around Love from the start. After considering a lot of things we came up with a story; about a girl who gets dumped. It starts with the girl getting dumped by her boyfriend, who dumps her for someone else. The girl finds it hard to get over him and finally finds someone else who is a lot better than her ex-boyfriend. It ends with the boy who dumps the girl at the start, getting dumped by the girl he left his girlfriend for. The song is going to be from the point of view of the girl who gets dumped at the start. We thought the story itself can also fit into a modern theme and relate to our target audience, as this is what they would like to see and this  happens. This narrative fits with the lyrics of the song for example a lyric from the song is ‘until you went for the girl next door’ at this part of the song we are going to introduce the new girl. We now have to think about the roles we are going to have during the process of this music video for example, who will be willing to be in the music video, who will be filming, making the schedule, keeping a diary of events, borrowing the cameras and camcorders.

As well as thinking about the music video we have to think about the song we are going to be using and we need to write to the music company and ask for permission. Even though, we have thought about the video to go with L.O.V.E we have to consider Love Fool, because we don’t know if the music company will grant us permission to use their song. Therefore, we have written two letters, one to EMI and the other to Universal Music Group. In the letter we have asked the music companies to try and reply to us in the next two weeks otherwise we will think that they have granted us permission and we will carry on with our media work.  We have given a time limit for the reply, because we also have limited time to complete our work, and we want to start the work as quick as possible. Also, we don’t know if we will be granted permission to use their song so it would be best to get the reply back quickly.
This is a copy of our permission letter:

Dear Sir or Madame,

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter as we know you must be very busy.
We are a group of four early entry A level media students, from Holy Trinity Catholic Media Arts College, in Birmingham, England. We are writing to ask you for permission to use the song L.O.V.E. sung by Nat King Cole for the completion of our A2 music video.

We have already began putting ideas together for our music video, and would be much obliged if you would allow us to use it. We may change lyrics and perhaps rhythm to the song but require your permission to do so in order to gain our full qualification.

If you allow us to use your song, our music video will be destroyed after the examination process and will not be uploaded on to any social networking sites, such as Facebook or Youtube. If you do not reply to this letter within two weeks we shall assume that we have the permission to carry out this task with your song.

Thank you so much for your time.

Yours Sincerely,

Sophie, Natalie, Emma and Anisa

At this point we didn’t really know what song we would be using for our music video as we had two weeks before any of the companies would reply to our request for using their song. Therefore we wanted to make the most of the time we had while we were waiting but we didn’t really know what to do as we couldn’t move on unless we knew what song we were going to be using. So we got together and talked through some of the things that we could do while we wait for the replies from the music companies. As we wanted to start the filming as quick as possible we thought of starting some of the filming while, but we didn’t know what song we will using and we didn’t want any of the filming to go to waste. So we had an idea to start filming scenes which we can use in both of the songs that we had chose; L.O.V.E. and Love Fool. So we thought about the narratives that we can use for both of the songs and how similar they are and how we can film scenes that can be used for both songs. We had to consider a lot of things like who we can ask to be in the music video, what part the characters would be playing, what the narrative would be and the locations we can use and a lot of other things as well. So we tried to keep the narratives similar so we don’t get too confused with two completely different narratives. The basic narrative that we came up for both of the songs was a girl who gets cheated on and how she tries to get over her boyfriend and then ends up finding someone new. Then we thought about scenes that we could use for both of the songs and we started of by taking pictures that we would show in both of the songs. The pictures would be of the boy and girl spending time together which the girl will be looking over afterwards when they break up. We also thought of filming the girl and boy together which we could then show as memories in the video.

This is the letter we received from Universal Music Group, regarding their song "More than words" which we wanted to use for our music video. However, they also sent a student form which they asked us to fill in and send back which would give us permission to use their song.

To be able to do make a music video it was very important that we were organised and knew what we were doing so we weren’t wasting any time. It was mentioned to us before by our teacher to keep a diary of events in which we should write about everytime we need to get togther to discuss or film something for the music video.
That is when we started to the diary of events in which we wrote literally everything; when we needed to get together to do filming, what time, where we would meet, what we were going to be doing, any equipments or props that we would need.
This is our Diary of Events

We also had another diary of events in which we recorded what we have done. Everytime we filmed something for the music video I would record it into the diary as evidence of all the work and fiming we have done.

We also had another diary in which we recorded what we have done. So everytime we went out for filming I would record everything that we have done into the diary as evidence. The diary contains information about all the filming, pictures and reshooting that we had done.
This is our diary
